How this will change our world has been everyone’s concern ever since OpenAI launched ChatGPT a few months ago. One of the most sophisticated machine learning and language processing models available is called ChatGPT. It is able to read, comprehend in context, and react in a manner akin to a human.

What this means for classroom instruction and learning is something educators wonder about. But education isn’t just about getting the right answers or writing flawless essays. Knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits are acquired through education. More important than the final product is the process.

Math was not rendered unnecessary by calculators, and schools were not rendered unnecessary by the Internet. AI will open up possibilities that weren’t even possible a year ago. In this article, we’ll discuss how ChatGPT has benefited lecturers and teachers alike.

  • Lesson plans: Request a lesson plan on Westward Expansion from ChatGPT. The tool assembles objectives, scaffolding, assessments, and activities. Do you prefer problem-based learning or a flipped classroom version of that? As requested, ChatGPT can modify the lesson plan.
  • Slide shows: When directed to outline a slide show for any topic and grade level, ChatGPT creates an intuitive organization and adds formative assessment questions if requested.
  • X-factor instruction: The tool described an activity that involved incorporating student-created metaphors into original stories conveyed through visual genres when I asked ChatGPT to develop a “challenging and creative approach to teaching metaphors” to students (e.g., a comic strip, a storyboard).
  • Simplify topics: You’re having trouble explaining a complex idea. Please “explain the topic to a first grader” using ChatGPT. The tool’s concise description of chloroplasts is provided below: “Inside plant leaves are tiny green components called chloroplasts that assist the plant in producing its own food. They function as miniature factories that produce food for the plant using water, air, and sunlight.
  • Discussion questions: Use ChatGPT to create thought-provoking, higher-order discussion starters for any class discussion.

2. Handouts And Other Materials

Perhaps ChatGPT’s biggest time feature is that it can generate text for materials and handouts that target your specific instructional needs. It can do the following: 
  • Develop instructions that describe cooperative learning roles and expectations.
  • Generate assignment directions with a detailed overview, grading criteria, a description of the required format, and task details. 
  • Create solved examples of math problems, chemistry equations, etc., with explanations of each step.
  • Build a prereading or advance organizer by extracting critical and unfamiliar vocabulary from a chapter and listing keywords with their definitions.
  • Provide word problems—for example, using ratios: ChatGPT gives the problem, the formula for solving it, and a full explanation of the procedure.
  • Compose a syllabus (boilerplate) that includes a course schedule, late-work policies, and a description of how assignments will be graded.
  • Make flashcards with questions and answers.
  • Produce posters that list classroom rules, 10 reasons why algebra is important to the student’s future, or the 20 most common writing errors of high school students, with short definitions and examples included.

While ChatGPT enhances our pedagogy and streamlines repetitive tasks, it’s simple to overlook its biggest flaw: The program always comes across as authoritative, even when disseminating false information. Bloviation that is incorrect and well-crafted also appears in human communication.

However, we must ensure that all AI-generated information is accurate and useful before making it available to students. Another flaw is the prose of the chatbot. Without explicit user instructions, it reads like an algorithm generated and lacks the personal tone necessary to uplift, inform, and empower students and stakeholders in the school. Always remember that ChatGPT compositions and curricula are first drafts when using them responsibly.
